WHY DESIGN MATTERS
In todays society, students will succeed by learning to set problems, solve problems, and innovate. Design thinking--an approach to solving problems using the investigative and open process used by designers of all disciplines--provides a method to teach these skills.
Design thinking in education is based on the pedagogical model of Studio-Based Learning (SBL), a way of both learning and teaching that has been the standard in creative design and architecture schools for decades. Despite its architectural roots, SBL is becoming an increasingly common approach to teach a wide variety of subjects. SBL fosters and develops 21st century skills like collaboration, communication, and innovation.
At its core, SBL is based upon the intensive, rigorous process of research, experimentation, application and presentation (REAP). This process immerses students, both individually and collaboratively, in the development of relevant skills and the process of applying them to identify and solve critical real world problems.
Through Studio-Based Learning, students actively build and apply knowledge while developing confidence in their ability to be active participants in their classrooms, schools, communities, and the world as a whole.
Noted New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, along with a host of others, has pointed out that its not simply the amount of education one possesses, but also the type of education one possesses that will determine future success.*
DEMO is focused on providing the very type of innovative, investigative, and creative educational experiences our world now demands.
